Thyroid Optimization

Helping You Understand Your Thyroid and Feel Your Best

If you’ve been told your thyroid is “normal” but you still struggle with fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, or feeling cold, you’re not alone. One of the biggest misconceptions about thyroid health is that a normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level automatically means your thyroid is functioning optimally.

While TSH is an important part of the evaluation, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Understanding how thyroid hormones work together and how they affect your body’s metabolism and energy production is just as important when determining how well your thyroid is functioning.

At Axios Health & Wellness, we believe thyroid optimization is about understanding the complete picture, not simply treating a laboratory value. We take the time to listen to your symptoms, review comprehensive thyroid testing, and determine whether your thyroid may be contributing to the way you feel.

What Does Your Thyroid Do?

Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of your neck, but it has a tremendous impact on how your body functions. Nearly every cell in your body relies on thyroid hormones to produce energy and keep your metabolism running efficiently. Without enough thyroid hormone, your body’s “engine” simply can’t perform the way it was designed to.

Think of your body like a car. Your thyroid hormones are the gasoline that keeps the engine running. Free thyroxine (Free T4) is the fuel stored in your gas tank, ready to be used when your body needs it. Free triiodothyronine (Free T3) is the active fuel that allows your cells to produce energy and perform their normal functions.

When there’s not enough fuel in the tank, or your body isn’t efficiently converting Free T4 into Free T3, the engine begins to slow down. That’s when many people experience fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, feeling cold, depression, and a general sense that they don’t feel like themselves.

Many symptoms of hypothyroidism overlap with other hormone imbalances. Fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, mood changes, and low libido can occur with several hormone deficiencies, not just thyroid disease. That’s why a comprehensive evaluation is so important before determining the underlying cause of your symptoms. If your thyroid isn’t the primary cause, our Women’s Hormone Replacement Therapy and Men’s Testosterone Replacement Therapy services may help identify and treat other hormone imbalances that could be contributing to the way you feel.

How Your Brain and Thyroid Work Together

Your thyroid doesn’t work by itself. It’s constantly communicating with your brain through the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis to regulate thyroid hormone production.

The process begins in the hypothalamus, a small area of the brain that acts as your body’s control center for many hormones. When your body needs more thyroid hormone, the hypothalamus releases thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which signals the pituitary gland to release thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH then travels through your bloodstream to your thyroid gland, telling it how much thyroid hormone to produce.

Your thyroid responds by producing mostly Free T4. Before your cells can use it, Free T4 must be converted into the active hormone, Free T3. Without this conversion, your cells can’t fully utilize the thyroid hormone your body is producing.

For your body to function at its best, your brain has to send the right signals, your thyroid has to produce enough hormone, and your body has to efficiently convert Free T4 into Free T3. When any part of that process isn’t working properly, your cells may not receive the thyroid hormone they need to function normally.

Thyroid Treatment Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

There are several medications available to treat hypothyroidism, and the best choice depends on your symptoms, laboratory results, medical history, and how your body responds to treatment.

At Axios Health & Wellness, we frequently prescribe Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT) medications because they contain both T4 and T3, the two primary thyroid hormones your thyroid naturally produces. The NDT medications we most commonly prescribe include NP Thyroid®, Armour Thyroid®, and RenThyroid®. For many patients, replacing both hormones more closely reflects the thyroid’s natural hormone production.

For patients who aren’t good candidates for NDT, or who need a different approach, we may prescribe levothyroxine combined with liothyronine (T3) to better match their individual needs.

Our goal is to determine which treatment best relieves your symptoms while maintaining healthy thyroid hormone levels. We monitor your symptoms, laboratory values, and clinical response over time, making adjustments when appropriate to help you feel your best.

Because hypothyroidism can slow your metabolism, many patients also struggle with weight gain or difficulty losing weight. Once thyroid hormone levels have been optimized, some patients notice improvements in their metabolism. Others may benefit from our Medical Weight Loss program as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Optimizing Your Thyroid Treatment

Starting thyroid medication is only the beginning. Finding the right medication and dose takes time because every patient responds differently. We monitor both your symptoms and laboratory results, making adjustments when needed to help you achieve healthy thyroid hormone levels and feel your best.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism, or you’re taking thyroid medication but still don’t feel like yourself, we’re here to help. At Axios Health & Wellness, we take the time to understand your symptoms, review comprehensive thyroid testing, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thyroid Optimization

What is thyroid optimization?

Thyroid optimization is a personalized approach to treating hypothyroidism by evaluating both your symptoms and comprehensive thyroid laboratory testing. Rather than relying on TSH alone, we also consider thyroid hormones such as Free T4 and Free T3, along with your overall health, to determine the treatment approach that’s right for you.

Why do I still have symptoms if my TSH is normal?

A normal TSH doesn’t always mean your thyroid is functioning optimally. Some people continue to experience fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, or feeling cold despite having a normal TSH. A comprehensive evaluation can help determine whether your thyroid, another hormone imbalance, or a different medical condition may be contributing to your symptoms.

What is Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT)?

Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT) is a prescription thyroid medication that contains both T4 and T3, the two primary hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Common NDT medications include NP Thyroid®, Armour Thyroid®, and RenThyroid®. For some patients, these medications more closely reflect the thyroid’s natural hormone production.

How long does it take to feel better after starting thyroid medication?

Every patient responds differently. Some people begin noticing improvements within several weeks, while others require medication adjustments over a few months before achieving their optimal response. Regular follow-up appointments and laboratory testing help guide treatment and determine whether adjustments are needed.

How do I know if thyroid treatment is right for me?

The only way to determine whether thyroid treatment is appropriate is through a comprehensive medical evaluation. We review your symptoms, medical history, physical health, and laboratory results to determine whether a thyroid disorder may be contributing to the way you feel and whether treatment is medically appropriate.
